A six-rayed star that shimmers over the surface of the stone when it is moved is an asterism that is only found in a rare form of ruby called star ruby. Rutile inclusions that are arranged like needles are what cause the star effect. Rutile is in charge of giving it a velvety gloss.  Pleochroism, or the ability to change color depending on the viewing angle, is a characteristic that frequently helps to identify star rubies. When moved in daylight, the six-rayed star effect shimmers across the stone's surface the most.  To optimize asterism, star rubies are often cut as cabochons with very high domes.  Large star rubies are quite uncommon.  The most typical forms are ovals and pears.  Native cuts are typical for most varieties of star and cat's eye gemstones, including most star ruby gemstones.

Rubies have a romantic feel to them.  Perhaps this is due to their stunning red rose color.  It has become a symbol of love, sophistication, and royalty.  Speaking of love, it is the traditional gemstone gift for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries. Ruby is also the birthstone of July and is one of the four precious gemstones.  Ancient Indians used to call rubies the "King of precious stones".  Rubies have the ability to display two colors depending on the angle at which they are viewed.
