14-KARAT GOLD
Gold is popular due to its lovely, delicate golden color. The color is often created using such metals as gold, copper, silver, and zinc, giving it a beautiful appearance. It has a distinctive, bright golden hue to it. The purest type of gold is yellow, followed by white and rose. 14-karat gold is chosen the most in fine jewelry, like engagement rings, due to its strength, durability, and affordability. It lasts longer than all the other gold karats. For these reasons, people prefer 14-karat gold. 14-karat refers to the metal mix that is 58.3% gold, compared to 18-Karat, for example, which is 75% gold. The more gold content, such as in 18-karat, the softer the metal. In the jewelry industry, any karat lower than 14 is not considered fine gold. Besides yellow, gold comes in both rose and white as well. Rose gold is becoming increasingly popular. Jewelers tend to combine this color a lot with rose cut diamonds and other alternative gemstones. White gold was created to mimic platinum's bright white finish. White gold is also easier for jewelers to work with than platinum. However, more maintenance is required for white gold. White gold is plated with rhodium to provide it with its white finish. The plating will wear off over time and will require re-plating. Even though there are different shades of gold they all contain the same amount. The difference in color varies due to the number of additional metals that are mixed with the gold.
